Julia Roberts, or Julia Fiona Roberts hardly needs any introduction. After having immortalized the romance on the big screen with her 1990 film Pretty Woman, she went on to do several big grosser such as My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill, Mystic Pizza, Valentine’s Day, Runaway Bride, Ocean’s Eleven and Twelve, and The Pelican Brief.
She went on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001 for her performance in Erin Brockovich. Recently her movie Eat, Pray and Love opened worldwide to critical acclaim. Julia Roberts is one of the highest-paid actresses in the world, topping the Hollywood Reporter’s annual “power list” of top-earning female stars from 2002 to 2006. In 2001, Ladies Home Journal ranked her as the 11th most powerful woman in America, ahead of then national security advisor Condoleezza Rice and first lady Laura Bush.
This is probably the reason why Julia Roberts has enough money to buy a second apartment in New York City. In addition to a huge ranch in New Mexico and a cliff top estate in Malibu California, Julia Roberts has not one but two apartments in New York. Her most recent purchase is a penthouse co-op for $3.895 million. It is located in a post-war building in Greenwich Village.
Roberts’ recent real estate acquisition has a rooftop terrace and is the only co-op on a coveted block between Fifth and Sixth avenues that consists of single-family homes. It was built on the site of the Tenth Street Studio Building in 1958. Tenth Street Studio holds the distinction for being the nation’s first architectural school, where several Hudson River School painters got their intricate knowledge on arts.
Why the Pretty Woman needed another apartment in New York is a matter open to some speculation. She is still holding on to her first buy – the pied a terre in Gramercy Park, which is incidentally about ten blocks from her recent buy. There is some conversation about her moving permanently to New York; however, those close to her are quick to rubbish these rumors.
Maybe Ms Roberts is on a real estate buying spree for tax purposes or she has so much money that she has no clue what to do with it. In either event, it is highly unlikely that she will leave her mansion in New Mexico and live in something that looks like a bachelor pad in comparison. Well, New York is glad to have Ms Roberts over and we hope that she will grace the city more often – now that she has two residences to choose from.
