The wait is over. After much anticipation, the Seattle-based retailer Nordstrom made its New York City debut with its discount outpost Nordstrom Rack. The Union Square basement level store takes up 32,000 square feet in the former lower level of the Virgin Megastore.
Fully stocked with 25,00 pairs of shoes, 2,400 handbags, 2,00 pairs of jeans, all merchandise is at 30 to 70 percent discounted price. Shelves of shoes stack high by the registers, beauty products, accessories and lingerie line the wall behind the escalator, rows of women’s and junior clothing fill the center floor and menswear takes up the far side of the wall.
As for the selection, it was impressive. Stewart Weitzmann, Burberry, Badgley Mischka flats and heels were spotted in the shoe selection. Bliss, Kerstase, Toni and Guy lined the beauty shelves; the lingerie department stocked up on Calvin Klein and Hue. Jeans ranged from Seven for All Mankind and Paige Denim, Bags included a slew of Rebecca Minkoff and L.A.M.B products, and an assortment of dresses, T’s and pants from Michael Kors, BCBG, Nanette Lepore, See by Chloe, Hugo Boss, and Marc by Marc Jacobs hung from the many sale racks.
Besides the fashionistas on a budget, who’ll shop at the Rack? Well, if you’re a Nordstrom card holder, don’t be afraid to swipe here. According to Jennifer Black and Associates Head Retail Analyst, Jennifer Black, ‘we believe New Yorkers will shop this store, as there are approximately 20,000 Nordstrom cardholders in the greater Manhattan area.’ And maybe one day, although there’s no plans as of now, a full-line Nordstrom will launch.
Nordstrom Rack is located at One Union Square South, 14th street at Broadway; opened Monday-Saturday 9a-11p, Sunday 11a-7p
